Maintain The Focus

A game lasts at least ninety minutes and players have to remain focused for the whole time. Or pay the penalty. St Mirren manager Danny Lennon is tired of seeing his side lose late goals and wants his players to sharpen their focus. He can see that more mental frailties could cost the club their place in the top-flight. Saints missed the chance to move six points clear of bottom club Hamilton when Francis Dickoh headed an 87th-minute winner for Hibs on Sunday. Lennon figures his side have lost 14 points this season because of losing late goals. Fir Park was one of the places their Achilles heel was exposed - Motherwell scored two goals in the final three minutes to beat St Mirren 3-1 in October. And Lennon has challenged his players to finally learn their lessons as they prepare to return to Fir Park tonight. He said: "For us to lose so many late goals the way we have done, it's definitely a psychological issue and it's something we need to rectify. We need the players to continually focus on their jobs and responsibilities because, at the top level, you have to defend for your life. Everything depends on it. When you don't do that, you have to put your hand up and take responsibility. Earlier in the season, I said that the players had to learn and cash in on these experiences. That penny must drop - and very quickly. The players might go out and make the same mistakes again but it is their livelihoods that they are playing for, so they need that correct mindset. I will never doubt their commitment and attitude but I do ask them to have more belief in themselves."
