Long Way To Go

Not the right time to worry when there are still so many games to go and points available

St Mirren sit second bottom of the SPL after losing 1-0 to Hearts last weekend. The Buddies meet the bottom club, Dundee, on Saturday but manager Danny Lennon has no fears about his player's ability to haul themselves away from the quagmire that is the relegation zone. St Mirren have now lost six SPL games in a row and Lennon admitted after the loss at Tynecastle that his side are in a relegation battle right now. Lennon is looking forward to the rest of the season confident they will no longer be in such a precarious position when it really matters. He said: "I'm not worried at all. We've got 24 games still to go, it's a marathon. I know what I'm going to get from the players most weeks. Four of those six games could have gone either way so we are not far away performance-wise. Last week, we showed a great fighting spirit in being difficult to beat and a deflected goal was the difference between the two sides. With the players, my staff, the board and the fans all being as one, we will be stronger and more difficult to beat and hopefully, beginning on Saturday, we can start to climb that table again." Saints lost out on the chance of points against St Johnstone, Celtic, Dundee United, Hibs and Aberdeen, as well as Hearts. Lennon went on: "We can't ignore the recent run of results. But we have a group of guys who are willing to go out there and fight and play for the black and white jersey and give their all. We've got 135 years of wonderful club history and we want to add to that and keep it going. It's going to take us getting our sleeves rolled up and a lot of hard work. The work and commitment from the boys has been second to none, they're a pleasure to work with. If I had to pick a group of guys to go into the trenches with, these are the ones I would have. We certainly believe we are sitting in a false position at this minute in time but the table doesn't lie. I feel that we have the quality to progress up the table. It's very close. There are seven points between ourselves and the top six. We know how quickly it can turn around. What we have to do - and there is no hiding from it - is start picking up points and winning football games again."
