Lennon Looking Back To Move Forward

Danny Lennon wants to emulate the St Mirren success from 1987 Danny Lennon has urged the St Mirren players to use the club's cup tradition to inspire them beat Aberdeen today. The Saints welcome the Dons to New St Mirren Park in the the Scottish Cup quarter-finals looking to book their third trip to Hampden  in three years. At least this time, if they make it the Saints will not meet Rangers. Two years ago Rangers ended the cup dream in the semi-finals and last year, the Paisley side suffered a  heartbreaking Co-operative Insurance Cup final loss against the nine-man Ibrox side. Lennon wants his side to have the drive and ambition to go one better this season and emulate the 1987 winning team. He said: "They have got great tradition in the cup, what they achieved in '87, and when you get to this stage you start a dream a little bit. Hopefully the boys can go out there and put a performance in and make dreams come true. Even last year they got to the League Cup final, and I thought they deserved to win the game. There are still a lot of players here who played in that final and I'm hoping they can use the hurt as a great motivational tool. My message this week to the players has been what a great, traditional club they are playing for, with great memories in the cup. With the belief, the character, determination and experience we have in that dressing room, I think they have a great opportunity to make those dreams come true." Lennon is also hoping this change of competition will set his players up to give their league survival hopes a boost by keeping their their cup run going. Lennon, whose side are seven points ahead of bottom club Hamilton, said: "We know we have a difficult and very important 10 games coming up. This gives us a switch of mindsets, a one-off game and what could really be a defining moment in your season. It can inspire you and give you that added incentive going into those last 10 games. It would give absolutely everyone associated with St Mirren a massive lift, but it also gives the players an incentive because they know there are only 11 jerseys available and everyone wants to play in the big games." Lennon is set to recall Darren McGregor after the defender understandably was left out of the side which los to Rangers last weekend. Lennon said: "Darren had a very difficult week last week, he had a lot to deal with personally and also mentally. He did try to come in on one day but he was here but he wasn't here. That was totally understandable. Now he has taken care of his business with the funeral of his father. I attended the funeral and the boy handled himself absolutely impeccably. I didn't expect anything less from Darren, and he was back in training the next day. The way he was as soon as he hit that training ground out there, he was back amongst us."
