Lennon Got What He Deserved

Nobody likes losing at Christmas and there must have been quite a contrast of emotions between Danny Lennon and Terry Butcher St Mirren manager Danny Lennon got a late Christmas present that he felt he and his players deserved after coming from behind to win at Inverness. Lee Cox gave Inverness an early lead but late goals in each half from Steven Thomson earned the Paisley side a vital three points. Thomson levelled the score seconds before half-time from 25-yards and he hit the winner from half that distance with five minutes left in the game. Saints had missed out on their Christmas day dinner to travel north on Saturday to prepare for the game and the sacrifice proved worth it for Lennon. The Buddies manager said: "Every manager would have been asking Santa Claus for three points today and I'm delighted that we got them because I've been a good boy this year. It's a very difficult place to come and we are delighted with the three points and our overall performance, which was very good. It probably took their goal to get us started to be perfectly honest. We created three or four very good opportunities and (Ryan) Esson made three very good saves in the first half and to be fair I didn't want the half to come to an end." Inverness boss Terry Butcher felt sick after his side failed to build on their early lead. He said: "I don't think I can put into words how disappointed I am. It feels like my Christmas lunch is now sitting uneasily in my stomach because of what happened today. Maurice (Malpas), the ground staff and the coaching staff put in a lot of hard work to get this game on and now you wonder why because we've thrown three points away and not played anything like we can play. It's the manner of our defeat more than anything else that doesn't sit well with me, but we have a chance to bounce back on Wednesday against Kilmarnock and bouncing back is something we generally do very well. We have missed a fantastic opportunity today. We scored early and I think one or two thought 'That's it, game over' and to their credit St Mirren passed it well. But some of the things our players have been doing today are just unbelievable. It's things I haven't seen from these players for a long while. Lots of things went wrong despite starting brightly and going 1-0 up but then we stopped doing the things we normally do. We stopped working hard, which is criminal. We stopped passing the ball to each other and we stopped communicating, so we were a team of strangers which is unusual for us because we are generally a compact unit. When we are bad, like we were today, we can be bloody awful, but we haven't seen that for a long while and we have to make sure that doesn't happen for a long while again. It's my worst feeling ever. It's unbelievable, worse than any other game this season." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is Scottish-Fitba.Net
