Law Takes Long View

There is plenty time to earn money if you have the talent Motherwell manager Stuart McCall is pleased to see a player willing to think of football progression first and money later. Nicky Law is expected to be unveiled on Friday when he completes his move to Fir Park when his current contract with Rotherham expires at the end of the month. Law - who is familiar with McCall from spells at Sheffield United and Bradford - could have chosen to stay in England as he was linked with both Scunthorpe and Crawley but opted for the SPL instead. McCall said: "At this moment in time, he is still a Rotherham player, he is under contract to June 30. But we've done a deal to bring him up on Friday and we are delighted to get him. He had a lot of clubs in England interested and, certainly financially, he could have done far better than coming to Motherwell.  So I'm really pleased that he wants to come north of the border and show his undoubted talent. He's an attacking player, he can play left, right, midfield, just off the front so he gives us a variety and hopefully he can chip in with some goals. His goalscoring record is not what it should be for the type of player he is but over the last two seasons he has been top of the assists chart. He is a creative player but he can score more." McCall is still hoping to keep hold of Steve Jennings with a new deal, despite being linked with SPL rivals Aberdeen and Hearts, after his contract expired at the end of last season. The 'Well manager said: "We would like to think that would be done in the next couple of days. I will speak about him more once he has put his pen to paper because you never know what can happen at the last second. But, as it stands, he is here for pre-season, he is buzzing and we are all looking forward to the new season." Motherwell would like to have Blackburn defender Gavin Gunning back for another loan spell after he impressed last season but they could face competition this time around.McCall said: "We certainly need a defender and Gavin covers the centre-half and the left-back positions so he would be ideal. We still need to speak to Blackburn. Because of some of his good performances last season he is on the radar of other clubs but he certainly enjoyed his spell with us and I would like to bring him back to the club. There is still a little bit of work to be done on that but it's one avenue we are going down."
