Last Is A Very Lonely Place

Dundee are starting to strain their necks to see all the clubs ahead of them in the SPL but hope springs eternal in the Dark Blue strips

Dundee are in the place every team wants to avoid: last place in the league.  It was at the very last minute that they were promoted to the top flight following Rangers going into administration and falling to be voted into the SPL in their new guise. The Dark Blues have struggled to make much headway so far but midfielder Kevin McBride is confident they just need one win to kickstart their season. Barry Smith's men have lost nine of their 11 SPL games to sit eight points adrift at the foot of the table. Asked about morale at Dens Park, McBride said: "Surprisingly very good. The manager has stuck by us and everybody's stuck by him. Everybody's disappointed we're losing, but at the moment everybody's feeling good and we just need to start picking up points. All we need is that one win and hopefully we'll carry on from there."  It is a long two months since Dundee could celebrate a league win, funnily enough against Saturday's opponents Hearts on 2 September. McBride knows another win is vital. He went on: "Hearts are a very good side, with a lot of young players coming through, but it's a home game for us - we've got to go and try to win it. We're feeling confident. I don't think a draw's enough in the situation we're in at the moment, even though it's early. You try and ignore it (the table), but people remind you of it. If we can get everybody fit, start getting points and climbing the table, you will see a different Dundee." McBride's influence on the Dundee side's efforts have been limited due to a  foot injury, but now he is back to full fitness and eager to help ease Dundee's plight.  He said: "It's frustrating when you're out the length of time I was out, but that's me getting back into training and I played against Aberdeen. If you're injured and the boys are winning it eases it a bit for you, because you're getting three points. But we weren't winning. It's more frustrating being injured and losing as well." Manager Smith has cut a disconsolate figure at times this season, with Dundee contributing to their own predicament. But McBride is optimistic Dundee can remain competitive. He said: "It's individual errors that are costing us each week. If we can cut that out then we can start getting three points. It's just concentrating. There are times we're in the game for 30 minutes then maybe lose a goal with somebody switching off or giving the ball away. If we can cut that out and keep concentrated for 90 minutes then it will be different. We're just looking at ourselves. We know we need to start cutting out all the mistakes and we know if we do that then we can start picking up points."
