John Boyle Looking For Profits

One year in seven to report a loss is not that bad really. Motherwell reported their first deficit for six years with the announcement of their figures up to 31 May 2009. The club blamed the £703,391 loss for the year to the demise of Setanta TV, essential and on-going pitch repairs and the failure to reach the top six in the SPL with the income generated from plying the final five games against the top clubs. However, things are different this year with top-six status already secured and chairman John Boyle promising that the position will be one of profit in a year's time. The Fir Park pitch and undersoil heating has undergone expensive repairs over the last two summers, with £350,000 spent in 2009. Boyle said: "Following this loss the club took decisive action and I am pleased to confirm that Motherwell Football Club will return to profit for the financial year ending May 31, 2010. The club is fortunate to be one of the few in the SPL with no bank debt, which enhances our financial position." The size of the deficit has not stopped the club offering new contracts to all of manager Craig Brown's first-team squad. Brow is hopeful that more players will follow Stevie Hammell's example and agree new deals. Brown said: "Stephen Craigan and Keith Lasley are under discussion and there are others too. We have identified the players we want to keep and that includes the entire first-team squad. It is now up to us to convince these players that the offer on the table is a fair one. We think the offers are good ones so we hope the players sign up, and even beyond that we are looking to add to the squad." The change in attitude and mood around Fir Park have encourage players to have second thoughts about leaving with the likes of midfielder Steve Jennings expressing their desire to remain at Fir Park after Brown and Archie Knox revitalised their season with a 12-game unbeaten run in the SPL. The unlucky 13th games was a 3-0 loss to 10-man Dundee United last weekend but Brown has been encouraged by his players' reaction ahead of the visit of tomorrow's visit of Falkirk. The former Scotland manager said: "When the team reported back for training on Monday they were bright and enthusiastic. Every team loses and after 12 games unbeaten we have lost a match. We have to show that the Dundee United game was just a blip and get another winning run under way, and there is a real determination in the group to do that. I've watched the game again and we had six outstanding scoring chances and had a goal controversially disallowed before Dundee United took the lead. Players know when they have had a bad day and they knew that we played as well as we have in many recent matches. We just conceded silly goals."
