International Games Gives Hanlon A Chance To Get That Winning Feeling Again
Paul Hanlon wants to be on a winning side for a change After yesterday's disappointment with the senior side, now it is the turn of the Under 21s to get in on the qualifying act. They start off their European Championships campaign on Monday against Bulgaria at their home ground of St Mirren Park. Paul Hanlon and his Scotland Under-21 teammates are desperate to make amends for last year's European Championships disappointment when Billy Stark's squad crashed out last time around when they lost out at the play-offs stage at the hands of Iceland after suffering a 4-2 defeat over the two legs. Hanlon was part of the team which played in both those games last October and can feel the squad's resolve is even stronger this time around. The Hibs defender said: "It's a massive game for us after the disappointment of the last campaign and going out in the play-offs. We are looking to put that right and, if we get a good result against Bulgaria, it will be a good start for us. It was a big disappointment to go out at the play-offs but it's pretty much a brand new squad with only three or four left from the last campaign. We've just got to use our experience that we got from the last campaign and help the other lads." Scotland head into the game on the back of last month's 3-0 friendly win over Norway in Paisley. Hanlon went on: "It was a great performance to beat them 3-0 at home and we just have to build on the confidence that we got from that game and try to get the same result again." Hanlon admits forgetting about club football and concentrating on international duty is a welcome break after last week's Edinburgh derby defeat to Hearts proved to be the latest setback in what has been a disappointing season so far for Hibs. He said: "We know we've not been playing as well we can so once we are back playing with Hibs, we've got to put that right. We've just got to put that game behind us now. We've got a massive game coming up against Bulgaria. It's a break from club football and it's welcome break so I'm just looking forward to the game now."
