Hibs Not Able To See Things Through To The Finish

Pat Fenlon's sick of lack of drive from his players

It will soon be that there will be no side in the SPL willing to talk to the written media. The latest 'no comment' came from Peter Houston and his Dundee United players after they had come back from being a goal down to win 3-1 at Tannadice on Christmas Eve.  No such hissy-fit for visiting manager Pat Fenlon who must be tired of having to comment of the poor performance of his defence since he arrived at Easter Road. Still winless since taking over from Colin Calderwood last month, Fenlon must have thought that would change after loanee Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring after 24 minutes. However, the second half was dominated by the home side with Johnny Russell equalising just before 60 minutes and captain Jon Daly's brace ensuring United took all three points, which saw them move into the top six of the SPL. Afterwards Fenlon, whose side have now lost four in a row, admitted he was fed up seeing his side again fail to take anything from games.

He said: "It's become a regular occurrence. We do well in first half of games, like we did today when we limited them to very little. They only had one chance in the first half but in the second half we conceded a goal and then we just dropped deeper and deeper and didn't defend properly as a team. Their first goal was a well-worked goal but the second goal is more difficult to take as we failed to get out of our box when we had the chance and when you are playing against somebody like Daly, you want him to be heading the ball from 15 yards rather than from closer in. We have worked on clearing balls and then squeezing up in training but it didn't happen today." Hibs now sit joint bottom of the table with Dunfermline on 14 points - four points behind Inverness Caledonian Thistle following their festive win over Aberdeen. Fenlon added: "We have a lot of players out of contract at the end of the season and if they want to be here we can't be in the position we are in. That's for everybody to take on board, not just the players but me and the staff. The position we are in is not good enough but we are in it because, as you saw again today, we have not been good enough to win football matches."
