Happy Endings?

Cowdenbeath FC are on course to finish their 95 year stint at Central Park with only their third ever title win in the SFL after last Saturday's 4-1 win over Dumbarton.

Colin Cameron is only a few games away from writing himself into a very short list in a certain Fife Hall of Fame. He could soon join Bill Hodge (1938/9) and Mixu Paatelinen (2005/6) as one of only three managers to take a Scottish League title to Central Park. Andy Matthew (1969/70), Craig Levein / Gary Kirk ( 2000/1) and Danny Lennon (2009/10) have taken the Blue Brazil to promotion via a runners-up or Play-off spot and there was a promotion in the last decade by default due to Livingston losing their 1st Division place because of financial irregularities but successful 'Beath managers since the club moved to their current home in 1917 from North End Park is more a box of delights than a Hall of Fame . Moves are afoot to move Cowdenbeath FC to a new site in the adjoining village of Lumphinnans after much bluster in the last five years over a new ground which is now badly needed for a side that could be playing the likes of Hibs or local rivals Dunfermline, Dundee and Falkirk next term. Cowden are committed to quitting Central Park by summer 2013 so after plans to move to the South End of the town and then land near Hill of Beath fell through the Lumphinnans move just simply must succeed if the club are to survive. However, Cameron is keeping his eyes on the prize of silverware and should 2nd placed Arbroath lose in the Angus derby at home to Brechin on Saturday and 'beath win at Albion Rovers the Fifers can clinch the Div 2 title against the Red Lichties the following Saturday at Central Park with a win. With six games left the more likely scenario is for both Cowden and Arbroath to keep winning and that would mean Cowden beating Forfar at home to win the title on April 21st. Outside the race for the Championship in Div 2 there is an intriguing prospect of East Fife (currently 5th in Div 2) coming into the Play-offs and facing Raith in a Kingdom derby in one of the Play-off semis. The Blue Brazil can really only throw automatic promotion away now and older Cowdenites have experienced that hurt. See May 1981 and Cowden at home on the final day of the season to Div 2 Champions Queens Park needing only a point to pip QOS for 2nd place. Cowden Player-Manager Andy Rolland chose to miss his first pen of the season with the score at 1-1 and then with nine minutes left QP made it 2-1 and held onto win. QOS beat Albion Rovers 3-0 at home to pip the Fifers and leave a generation of Blue Brazilians heartbroken, Cowden would not win promotion for another 11 years ! Current boss Cameron knows the history and as he looks like being the last boss on Central Park soil a title win would be doubly satisfying. Sportscene Results and Gillette Soccer Saturday will be keeping more than a brief eye on the top of Division 2 from this coming Saturday. The Blue Brazil are close to enjoying their version of the Rio Carnival.
