Great Scot

More football stories from the past to fill those long winter days after Christmas

Scotland has produced a number of notable managers with the likes of Bill Shankley, Jock Stein and Sir Alex Ferguson often being touted as the best ever. However, a book published today looks at one manager who rarely gets a look in whe such discussions take place although he will have his supporters. Scot Symon was manager of Rangers for 13 years starting in 1954. In this period he steered the club to 15 trophies and an appearance in the first European final to involve a British cub. It was Symon who signed Jim Baxter for Rangers so even his detractors must admit he could spot a player. He even signed Sir Alex Ferguson who contributes to the words of praise in David Leggat's book 'Great Scot, the James Scotland Symon Story'.  In Rangers troubled present, this is the kind of book that will bring a smile to the faces of their fans as they recall the days when Scotland ruled Rangers.  'Great Scot, the James Scotland Symon Story' by David Leggat, published by Black and White publishing available from today priced £14.99.
