Goodwillie For Scotland

The future is bright for David Goodwillie Jon Daly can see his Dundee United partner David Goodwillie getting a call up to the National Squad after the pair shared the goals that beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Goodwillie opened the scoring after 15 minutes and Daly doubled the advantage on 69 minutes to set up an eventual 2-1 win for the visitors. An injury-time goal from Conor Sammon failed to prevent three points leaving Rugby Park as Kilmarnock were reduced to 10 men by Frazer Wright's 82nd minute ordering-off. Daly hailed the prolific Goodwillie's latest contribution for United and predicted an international future for a player already part of the Scotland Under-21s set-up. He said: "It was nice to see Goody scoring again. I think David is an excellent player, I think anyone who watches him in training every day knows he has the potential to go all the way. If he keeps his head and keeps his feet on the ground then he can go all the way, if he keeps that form up I don't think it will be long until he gets a full call-up to the national team. It's one of the most productive partnerships I've been involved in, in terms of goals and general link-up play. I think David does really well reading my intentions and he gives you good shouts as to where he wants the ball. I enjoy playing with him. We knew Kilmarnock would come at us, we anticipated that, and when we scored the second goal it hit them for six. There's not many teams that will come here and win." United manager Peter Houston reckons the goal threat provided by Daly and Goodwillie is something that sets his side apart as they look to repeat last term's third-place finish. He said: "You want your strikers scoring goals and it's always good to have them confident. Goodwillie's form is improving greatly and big Jon Daly complements him so well. It's great for them to get the goals because they've real quality. Goodwillie shields the ball so well, while Jon is strong in the air and a real leader for us. It was a tough three points for us. We were under pressure at times, but we dug in and were comfortable until the last 30 seconds when they got that goal." Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen would argue it was not quite that straightforward for United, but admitted his players only had themselves to blame for spurning earlier chances. He said: "We totally dominated the match, but there's no point playing good football and getting opportunities if you don't bury them. Sometimes in football, the better side doesn't win." Paatelainen was in no mood to defend Wright, whose second yellow card for dissent summed up a frustrating afternoon for the home side. He added: "Frazer lost his head and handicapped the team. The bottom line is I don't want players to go and talk to referees in the manner he did." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is ScottishFitba Net
