Glasgow City To Be Crowned Champions

26 October 2012 15:43
Glasgow City will be officially crowned Champions of Scotland for the sixth successive season on Sunday after their last home game of the campaign, against Aberdeen, at Petershill, 2pm, with free entry for all spectators.

The City players will be presented with the trophy by Scotland national coach Anna Signuel, who along with a number of the City players themselves, will be looking to get over the last second defeat by Spain in the European Championships play-off last midweek. With Glasgow City into the Scottish Cup Final and having already secured the title and the League Cup, City can make this a treble winning season, meaning there is still more than enough football for Eddie Wolecki Black’s side to get themselves lifted for, irrespective of international disappointment. The dominance of Glasgow City in the domestic game has been nothing short of remarkable over the last 6 seasons, making discussions over the ability of Scotland to move to a semi-pro status ever more apparent as City try and compete with the full-time teams on the continent in the Champions League. With the success of Scotland and Glasgow City, it remains questionable how much further women’s football can go in this country when players still need to combine full-time work against professional opposition. The announcement this week of further investment of £3.5 million by the English FA into the game down south and further development of their semi-professional League with the addition of a second division, begins to put increasing scrutiny on the SFA to follow suit if it wants to avoid being left behind other nations for good. The race for the runners-up spot behind City remains a three way battle between Forfar, Celtic and Hibernian. Forfar welcome Celtic to Station Park on Sunday and if they can take all three points, the Hoops will be out of the running. Hibernian play Spartans in the Edinburgh derby and will ensuring no slip ups to take their challenge down to the last game in the SWPL a week later.Elsewhere Hutchison Vale take on Falkirk, Rangers travel to face Kilmarnock and Inverness host Hamilton Accies.
