A tough group face to progress from for Glasgow City

The UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying draw took place at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon earlier this afternoon, providing Scottish Champions Glasgow City with a group to savour. City, who entered the qualifying round as top seeds, face hosts Dutch giants FC Twente, Croatian Champions WFC Osijek and the best side in Malta, Birkirkara FC. Already being tagged as the toughest group in the opening rounds, City First Assistant Team Coach Donald Jennow, gave his thoughts on the draw and the teams his side will face from the 8th to 13th August. He said: "For the second year in a row, one of the most anticipated days in our season has thrown us an exciting and challenging group. Our hosts FC Twente qualified for this year’s tournament as winners of the newly formed Dutch/Belgian league. In bringing the two leagues together the two Associations have created a more competitive environment which will benefit the clubs when it comes to European competition. Our Scottish internationalists will be familiar with some of their players from competing against the Dutch in the Cyprus Cup. Holland is a nation who develop athletic, technical players with the well documented 'Total Football' as their foundation.  Osijek are a team we faced last year and had to work very hard to beat in the qualifying round. They are as strong a pot 3 team as there is and we are well aware of the challenge they will pose.  Maltese champions Birkirkara beat another of our previous opponents Mosta to the title to earn their place in the Qualifying Round. I have no doubt they will be well prepared for the game and all national champions are used to winning so we will have to ensure we perform at a high level consistently in all 3 matches.  Is this a difficult draw? Yes. Am I excited about it? Absolutely. As a club we work tirelessly to give ourselves the opportunity to test ourselves against the best in Europe. As top seeds in the qualifying round our aim is a simple one - Qualify. Our preparations for the qualifying round kicked in a few weeks ago, but I wouldn’t be surprised if tonight's training session sees the girls a little bit more fired up!"
