Gilmour Eyes More Cuts In Paisley

Gus MacPherson has secures SPL safety for another season but looks to be rewarded with a cut in his budget. St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson is having to wait to have a meeting with chairman Stewart Gilmour t see what resources he will have for the forthcoming season. The chairman has already stated that there may be further cuts to the club's threadbare squad this summer. MacPherson is not wanting to comment until he has had a chance to speak to Gilmour. However, I am sure there will be a frank exchange of views when they do meet as MacPherson was forced to name only five substitutes in Wednesday night's game at Hamilton. It is sure that the Buddies boss will have concerns about any attempt to further reduce his playing pool. MacPherson said: "I'll wait until I speak to the chairman, but I've read it in the paper. I'll have a meeting with him after the season. Once I speak to him, we'll see where we are." MacPherson admitted he was down to the "bare bones" following knocks to Stephen Thomson and Andy Dorman - one of the players Saints look set to lose when his contract expires this summer. Yet, it is not as if there is a major injury crisis at St Mirren Park, emphasising just how little MacPherson had to work with. "That's all we had available," he said of what was his full 16-man squad. Like many a chairman, Gilmour will be looking to save money and he has already admitted any cuts would have been even deeper had the club been relegated. But for the fourth season in a row, MacPherson has steered the side to safety, with Saints mathematically sealing their fate on Wednesday. Cutbacks could be avoided if the club is sold this summer, although it has been on the market for almost the whole season. MacPherson continues to refuse to let any uncertainty over the ownership affect him. He said: "We'll be the last to know. It's been that way for some time. We heard on the day that the club had been put up for sale. So the day that it's sold will be the day we find out. There's nothing we can do about it. We're employees of the club - that's all we are." MacPherson is on a rolling 12-month contract and has made no secret of his wish to one day test himself at the highest level. Rangers boss Walter Smith recently admitted he might have quit long ago had he been involved in a perennial relegation battle. But MacPherson said: "There's a slight difference between myself and Walter - he's about 20 years older than me! We are motivated, there's no doubt about that. We want to be successful, we want to be involved in management for a long time, and we've got to make sure that we do things right. I look at a lot of the things going on at Rangers - just from what I read - the club up for sale. A lot of things getting talked about are very similar to what's going on here. We've just got to make sure that we remain as positive as we are and as motivated as we are." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba.net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba.net)This is Scottish-Fitba.Net
