Gilks in line for Scotland call

Scotland boss Craig Levein has confirmed that Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks is under consideration for the Euro 2012 qualifying games against Lithuania and Liechtenstein next month.

Rochdale-born Gilks, 28, qualifies through his Scottish grandmother and has been on the radar of Levein and Scotland goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart since last season. Gilks is understood to be desperate to pledge allegiance to Scotland.

"He is one we became aware of a while ago and have kept track of his progress," Levein told www.scottishfa.co.uk.

"Obviously he was a key figure in Blackpool's promotion to the Barclays Premier League and while I will not name my squad until tomorrow, he is one I think we need to take a closer look at.

"He comes highly recommended, is playing regularly for his club and the next logical step is for our goalkeeping coach to work closely with him.

"As I have said since I took this job, we need to cast our net as wide as possible to make sure we have the strongest squad possible.

"If there are talented players able to represent Scotland then we have a duty to do our homework and make sure we leave no stone unturned."

Gilks is not the first goalkeeper born in England to represent Scotland. Bob Wilson was born in Chesterfield and won two caps in the early 1970s.

Neil Sullivan was born in Sutton but made 28 international appearances, while Andy Goram was born in Bury but earned 43 caps for Scotland.
