Get To Falkirk

25 February 2011 21:35
40 years ago Falkirk and Cowdenbeath were First Division teams when that division was Scotland's top league with Cowden fighting relegation. 2011 sees history repeating in the second tier! Long before the self-styled Kincardine Bridge  derby came into being because of the lack of Fife derby matches for Dunfermline, Falkirk and Cowdenbeath were something of traditional local rivals.1969/70 saw the Bairns pip "The Miners" (pre Blue Brazil) for the Second Division title in a two league set-up with Cowden getting their revenge in the League Cup Quarter finals the following season before going out to Rangers. These were the days when crowds of nearly 10,000 were not unusual for close encounters between the teams but although that isn't the case now these two old foes still like a scrap at The Falkirk Stadium or Central Park.Jimmy Nicholl knows it will be a tough one for his side on Saturday with eight goals conceded in their last 3 matches and only one scored (from the penalty spot).Jimmy Nicol told SF.net: "Falkirk are well placed to mount a challenge to the leaders so we will have to defend better than we did in our last two Saturday games against Dunfermline and Raith. We made bad errors last Saturday against Raith and the game was over by half time. We must be consistent as nobody wants a repeat of the 5-1 last time we were at Falkirk. They are as capable up front as both our recent opponents in the Fife derbies."Up front John Dempster could be available again for 'Beath after recovering from a knock while skipper Mark Baxter could also return, Cowden need their influential players firing on all cylinders now and with the Central Fifers now in the play-off zone, and the top six all opening a gap between them and the rest, this is a bit of a six pointer for the Blue Brazil.Following their trip to Falkirk the Blue Brazil play a re-scheduled league game against QotS at Central Park next Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick off.
