Following In Brother's Footsteps

It was hard to wipe the smile of John Sutton's face last night in the post game press conference. And why not! Motherwell's goal hero John Sutton is looking forward to the chance of emulating big brother Chris by masterminding a European shock after his goal helped the Steelmen into the Europa League play-offs. Sutton diverted home Motherwell's second goal in 13 minutes in a 3-0 win over Norwegian side Aalesund as the Lanarkshire team secured an impressive 4-1 aggregate win. The forward remembers watching Chris and his Norwich team-mates stun Bayern Munich home and away in the 1993-94 season and he wants to be involved in a similar glamour tie with the likes of Liverpool and Porto in the draw. Sutton said: "The glamour tie was the incentive. It's difficult because the bigger the team, the harder it is to get through. If you get through then you are in a group of four with some big teams, so there are pros and cons whether you get a really big boy like Juventus. It's a bit similar to when Chris was at Norwich and going to Bayern Munich and knocking them out. I remember Alan McInally predicting Bayern would score 10. I couldn't quite believe it when Jeremy Goss volleyed it in. That would be an aspiration to try to emulate that but I don't think we will be expecting that." Sutton netted in the 13th minute after Jamie Murphy had lashed home an early opener and Motherwell's joy was complete when Murphy squared for substitute Jonathan Page to slot home in the 89th minute. Aalesund manager Kjetil Rekdal felt his team had been taught a painful lesson on their European debut. The former Norway international, whose team qualified thanks to domestic cup success, said: "It's goals that count. Even though we were the team with the most possession and we pushed forward from the start of the game, we lost. It's a learning process. In the Scottish league it's man against man. In the Norwegian league there are some young boys playing. We were too small to handle the grown-up professionals."
