Every Goal Counts No Matter When Scored
The tension is starting to tell on players in teams at the wrong end of the table. Hamilton's Flavio Paixao has high hopes that his team's last-gasp 1-0 win on Saturday against St Mirren will be the start of a run of form which will keep the Lanarkshire side well out of the relegation quagmire. The Portuguese striker headed home in the 92nd minute of the league game at New Douglas Park, allowing Accies to swap places with the Buddies and sit in 10th place in the table. Hamilton are now six points ahead of bottom side Falkirk, who visit New Douglas Park next weekend. Paixao said: "It's the most important goal I've scored for Hamilton and I think we deserved it as we work really hard in the week and have deserved it before now. I had asked the gaffer (Billy Reid) how much time was left and he said there were three minutes to be added, so I said, 'come on, keep believing'. In football, if you don't believe you have nothing, so I believed in the team and in trying to score - fortunately I did and it was an emotional goal as it was very important for us. Everybody is really happy as it's a massive victory for Hamilton; we're up above St Mirren and on the same points as Kilmarnock, and hopefully next week can be the same." St Mirren defender Jack Ross was sick at losing another late goal - the third time in just six weeks that the Paisley side have conceded a costly last-minute winner. Gus MacPherson's side have this week to wipe league business from their minds as they concentrate on next Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final date with Rangers. After that, they will be looking to halt the run of bad luck and get a league win for the first time in 12 games. Ross said: "It's a bad part of the season that we've been losing late goals - this was another one and it's cost us a significant number of points so we need to rectify it. I don't think it's one specific thing that's happened for each of the late goals, it's just that there have been individual or collective mistakes as a team, simple as that. We're really disappointed; I don't think it was a particularly great game and we didn't play particularly well, but we would have taken a point from it so to lose a goal in injury time is sickening, especially with it coming at that late stage of the game. Once we get back to training at the beginning of the week we have a huge game with the cup final and that will be our focus for a week - after that we'll concentrate on getting ourselves out of the poor position we're in at the moment. We're in a difficult position now, but the players have got into that position and it's only us that can get ourselves out of it. We believe there's enough within the squad to do that but we have to show that and on occasions where we play well, that's where you have to be strong enough to see it out."
