Euro 2012 Group I Update - September 2011

07 September 2011 15:14

The reigning World and European champions, Spain, have been in control of this group from Match Day 1 and confirmed their qualification with an emphatic 6-0 thumping of Liechtenstein on Tuesday evening. Thus the only question left is who will secure the runners-up spot and enter the play-off round. The Czech Republic's disputed last minute penalty equaliser against rivals Scotland has given them the edge although a tight 1-0 home win for the Scots over Lithuania on Tuesday night has kept the poistion finely balanced.

Each side has a tie against Spain to play, but with the Czech Republic having got the better of the Scots over the two head to head matches, the Euro '96 beaten finalists only need to secure four points from their last two games to ensure that they extend their qualifying campaign until the November play-offs. The Scots are likley to need to win both games and will be hoping that Spanish heads are elsewhere when the two countries meet in the final match in Alicante on October 11th.
