Barry Smith's squad needs augmenting for playing in the top flight

Ahead of the SPL season opener against Kilmarnock,  Dundee have agreed a deal with former Falkirk striker Mark Stewart and are hopeful of agreeing another with ex-Aberdeen defender Davide Grassi. Stewart's signing was confirmed this afternoon, while manager Barry Smith hopes Grassi's transfer will be confirmed ahead of Saturday's game at Rugby ParkHe said: "We are waiting on international clearance for Davide and Mark Stewart will sign today, which gives us more numbers and strength in depth. There's not a lot of money but there is enough to maybe bring a few more in that are within our budget."

Stewart has impressed Smith on trial after being released by Bradford after he picked up SPL experience with Falkirk and scored 17 goals in his final First Division season with the Bairns before moving to West Yorkshire. A broken toe and a change of management hindered Stewart's impact at the npower League Two club and he returned to Scotland on loan with Hamilton in January.Defender Grassi spent the 2009-10 season with the Dons under Mark McGhee and suffered a triple cheekbone fracture in a League Cup defeat against Dundee. He is currently with Belgian second division side FC Brussels. Smith, who named himself on the bench for Tuesday's Scottish Communities League Cup shoot-out win at Peterhead due a shortage of players, will have Iain Davidson back for the Rugby Park game after the former Raith midfielder trained tofday after missing the Balmoor trip with a bug.
