Cup Tie for Cowden

04 September 2012 15:39
Cowdenbeath travel to Ochilview on Sunday in one of the three Ramsdens Cup Quarter final ties.

In July Cowdenbeath FC Chairman Donald Findlay set Blue Brazil manager Colin Cameron a task of a top six finish in Division 1 in season 2012/13 and now that target doesn't seem so far fetched for the so called poor relations in Fife's trio of second tier clubs (see also Dunfermline and Raith).

Any Cowdenbeath follower who has taken time to watch Cameron put his side through their paces in training nights at Beath High School playing fields on a Tuesday or Thursday recently might have predicted Cowden to come good following their 0-4 opening day thrashing by near neighbour Dunfermline Athletic at Central Park.   The Central Fife side go into Sunday's Ramsdens Cup tie with East Stirlingshire at Stenhousemuir joint second in Division 1 and unbeaten since that opening day reverse against The Pars.   There is quiet confidence ahead of the game with the side at the bottom of the SFL currently and Cowden will gear up for Sunday's tie with a Fife Cup 1st Round match at Burntisland Shipyard on Tuesday night (4th Sept).   Cowdenbeath have not reached a national cup semi final since they lost 2-0 to eventual trophy winners Rangers in the League Cup semi final of 1970. Cowden's only other major semi final was again in the League Cup when they lost 9-3 to Hearts at neutral Easter Road in 1959 despite only trailing 3-2 at one stage in a match that had shades of a famous international at Wembley two years later when Scotland lost to England by the same scoreline.   Hosts Rangers would be expected to beat Queen of the South on current Ibrox form and a semi final against the Glasgow giants once again beckons for 'Beath. If Raith were to win at Firhill against Partick Thistle an all Kingdom Ramsdens semi final would whet the appetite of Blue Brazilians while the other last eight tie sees Arbroath host Stenhousemuir.   Sunday's game at Ochilview is a 3pm kick off.
