Chance To Go Top

Ben Williams wants Hibs to build on their decent start to the SPL season

Hibs have the chance of topping the SPL table, for a few hours at lease, if they win over Aberdeen in the lunchtime game at Pittodrie.  Goalkeeper Ben Williams, one of 10 summer signings by manager Pat Fenlon,  is confident  the club are making the right moves on the road to "where it belongs". Hibs travelled north on the back of a six-game unbeaten run in the league which is in stark contrast to their form in recent season. Williams believes Fenlon's adjustments to the playing staff is is starting to pay dividends. He said: "When I came here in the summer the manager explained to me exactly the position the club was in and explained exactly what was needed. Although it is still incredibly early days in terms of the season and it's still a work in progress, it looks like that plan is coming into fruition. He has identified the players he wants both in and out of the club. I think he knows what it's going to take to build a club back to where it belongs." Hibs have not been lucky with goalkeepers in recent years and fans will be looking to Williams to be an able gate-keeper. However, the former Manchester United trainee was not cowed by facing demands from fans still hurting from the 5-1 Hampden derby thrashing in the Scottish Cup final in May. Williams said: "I thrive on the expectation. I have grasped it with both hands. When the manager explained what was required I was relishing the fact that I could be part of a team that turns a club that has been under-achieving for, particularly the last two years, into a competitive top-six side. So far that has gone to plan, we are in and around the top three for the last few weeks, we have a chance to go top on Saturday if we win and results elsewhere go our way. It's credit to the manager and the coaching staff for putting us in that position." Williams will see a familiar face today in the shape of Dons' striker Scott Vernon. While Vernon has yet to score on league duty this season he did take his chance in the 93rd minute to score the winner in the Scottish Communities League Cup at Dunfermline on Wednesday. Williams said: "I was at Colchester for a year with Scotty and when I was at Crewe a few years before I came across him when he was at Blackpool because he is a Manchester lad as well. I didn't consult Scotty before I came up but I bumped into him about a year ago and he was doing well, playing every week and scoring goals. I asked him how he found it and he loved it. It was another positive view of the SPL. Scotty scored the winner late on in the cup, they looked down and out with 10 minutes to go against Motherwell and clawed back a 3-3 draw. It shows there is good team spirit there and honest lads who are going to work for 90 minutes, so that makes for a difficult game."
