Business As Usual For Glasgow City

Glasgow City started this season's league campaign where they left off last season. Which team will be able to stop their winning run in the league?

Reigning Women's Premier League champions Glasgow City got the defence of their crown off to a great start with a well earned 6-0 win over Forfar Farmington away from home.  A hat-trick from from City and Scotland striker Jane Ross, a double from Eilish McSorley and a 40 yard strike from Christie Murray sealed the win at one of the most notoriously difficult grounds to come to in the SWPL. City head coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: "In the past this has been a really difficult place to come, not just for ourselves but all of the top four sides and last year Forfar took points off most of our rivals on this pitch. However, I felt the tempo we set from the very start dictated the flow of the game and we restricted them to one chance throughout the whole 90 minutes. Although not top of the League on day one, I am very happy with a fantastic result and performance against one of the strongest sides in the League." Forfar only recorded one effort in the whole match and curiously enough it was the first chance of the match when Caroline Heron hit a shot inside the box, which was saved by City’s Lee Alexander in the opening 60 seconds. From then on, it was pretty much City’s game and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring, with an impressive 40 yard strike from Christie Murray. It was an audacious strike by the City forward, but one which proved very worthwhile as she opened her account for the season.  On the half hour mark, Jane Ross doubled City’s advantage. Murray beat her marker in the middle of the park before passing to Lisa Evans on the left. Evans took on Rachel Small before crossing into the box for Jane Ross to finish with ease. Less than ten minutes later and City were 3-0 up. Emma Fernon sent in a deep cross to Nicky Docherty at the back post and the full back, who a few moments before was denied her first ever City goal by a good save from the Forfar keeper, controlled well, turned Small and played an excellent ball across the six yard box for Jane Ross to score her second. It was 4-0 before half time as centre half Eilish McSorley hit a powerful low drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. After the break, City continued to control the game and McSorley made it number five with another fine strike cutting inside before unleashing a 20 yard strike into the back of the net. Further attempts came and went for City with Evans, McSorley Ciara Barnes and Jo Love all going close. However, it was Jane Ross who showed once more how it is done, scoring her third and City’s sixth, getting on the end of a Julie Melrose pass before firing into the corner of the net. City’s next match is at home on Sunday 25 March against newly promoted Aberdeen with a 2pm kick-off.
