Appeals Review Welcomed By Jeffries

Jim Jeffries likes the idea of the appeals procedure being investigated Hearts manager Jim Jefferies is pleased to see that common sense has prevailed with the news that the SFA are looking at stripping referees of their direct involvement in red card appeals with the right of veto removed. Jefferies has been at the forefront of the opposition to the current system which allows the match official to review his decision before any independent viewing of the incident takes place. They were also allowed to block claims for wrongful dismissal reaching a review panel. SFA chief executive Gordon Smith recently confirmed he would submit a draft proposal to the board for a radical overhaul of the system, which could be put in place for next season. Many have argued there is an inherent conflict of interest in referees sitting in judgment on their own decisions. Jefferies said: "There aren't too many who are going to agree they got it wrong because it doesn't make them look too good. I'm sure common sense will prevail and it'll be sorted out." It is understood a three-strong panel - which could include a member of the SFA's referee development department, an ex- player and an ex-manager - would judge if red card appeals were to be upheld if the proposed changes are given the green light. The original referee will be invited to either submit evidence to support his decision or make a statement directly to the panel, though Jefferies questioned any involvement from the official. He said: "It may be better if he's not and let them make a decision on it." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is Scottish-Fitba Net
