Aim High And Don't Look Down

The Buddies are making every effort to distance themselves from the bottom of the table. Danny Lennon has Aberdeen in his sights as St Mirren increased their lead over bottom club Hamilton on Saturday with a 3-1 win. Hamilton took the lead when David Buchanan scored his first career goal just before half-time to give Accies a deserved lead and gave them hope of a much-needed three points. However, the half-time team talk (not for publication in a family website) worked it's magic and Saints responded positively in the second half.  Striker Michael Higdon scored with a header, a penalty and a volley to leave the Lanarkshire club nine points adrift with the Buddies having a game in hand. More misery was poured on Accies as they lost defender Martin Canning when he conceded the spot-kick with a challenge on Buddies' substitute Craig Dargo. However, Saints boss Lennon is less concerned with the relegation battle than chasing Aberdeen, whose loss at Motherwell left them just six points ahead of the Buddies before the their visit to Paisley on Wednesday night.  Lennon said: "By no means is it over, we know how well Hamilton can finish. But the main objective is not to look behind us. It is not just about survival at this club. We have a very important game against Aberdeen on Wednesday evening. We are going to try to finish as high as we possibly can and we are going to try to produce that level of performance we produced in the second half for the rest of the season. I was absolutely delighted for the supporters, they thoroughly deserved it, they came out in numbers and backed us and it was fantastic to give them something back. I just hope from now until the end of the season we can give them a hell of a lot more."  Higdon, who scored the first hat-trick of his career, agreed with his manager. The former Falkirk striker said: "We are looking above us, not below us. We seen the table in the dressing room after the game. Aberdeen got beaten and we play them on Wednesday. If we win then we are three points behind so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know we can catch them."  Hamilton boss Billy Reid insists the wounds his side suffered in Paisley were again self-inflicted. He said: "We do play well at times but we cannot see games out. The number of times we have lost a penalty and had a man sent off this season is criminal. That's what has killed us." Buchanan registered his first goal in senior football but like the rest of the Accies players he left New St Mirren Park disconsolate after again surrendering a lead. He said: "The amount of games where we have been 1-0 up and leading at half-time, and not seen games out is disheartening. It's not good enough. But we have to keep believing, get on the training ground and see where it takes us."
