Looks like Cowdenbeath FC might be gaining a few new or lapsed supporters from August. If you fancy joining Cowden at the summit of their recent achievements here's the other runners and riders. Rumours are that the Pars got their nickname due to a court case involving a former Cowden manager in the early part of the last century. When the judge said: ''You are the manager of Cowdenbeath FC... are they on a par with Dunfermline? '' He replied: ''No m'laud, we're better!!''Raith RoversAnother derby for the Blue Brazil 12 miles in the other direction. MP for Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy and Raith fan, former PM Gordon Brown, prepare to get pelters when Cowden fans take a day trip!Stirling AlbionPromoted with Cowdenbeath from Division 2. For the record, Dundee won 1-0 at Central Park.FalkirkAnother old rival from the 1970/1 season when Cowden were the only part time team in a top division of 18 clubs and were relegated after one term in the top flight with 17 points from 34 games. They did, however, beat The Bairns in the League Cup Quarter Finals in 1970/1 before losing to Rangers 2-0 in a Hampden semi final.Queen of the SouthCowden drew 0-0 with the Dumfries side at Central Park at the end of season 1969/70 to gain the point required for promotion to the old First Division as runners-up to Falkirk. 40 years on another significant side from Cowdenbeath's past are in the same division as the Blue Brazil.Partick ThistleIn 1978 the Blue Brazil held the Jags to a 1-1 draw at Firhill in the SFA Cup when Thistle were 5th in the Premier League and Cowden were 9th in Div 2. Roughie was in goals for the Glasgow side and Bertie Auld was the Jags manager. The Jags equaliser that day came SIX minutes into Injury Time. A dodgy penalty put Thistle through in the replay. Revenge was sweet in the early 90's when Cowden went to Firhill in the cup and won 1-0 - thanks to a penalty.
