1970 And All That

Cowdenbeath are on the brink of their first national cup semi final for 42 years. The Ramsden's Cup Quarter Final draw has paired The Blue Brazil with East Stirlingshire at Ochilview and now the Fifers are one game away from their first national cup semi final since 1970 when they lost a League Cup semi to eventual winners Rangers 2-0 at Hampden. Could history be about to repeat itself or can 'beath go one better and maybe even set up and all Kingdom final v Raith Rovers who face Partick Thistle in their last eight Ramsden's tie ?   All clubs have a bogey team and Cowden fans would tell you, in the 70's and 80's at least, that team was the 'Shire.   Cowdenbeath have not reached a Scottish Cup Quarter Final since 1931 when they lost a last eight tie to Motherwell but the closest they have come since then is season 1980/1 when they were 12 minutes away from a last eight SFA Cup tie v Celtic and leading 1-0 v 'Shire thanks to a Billy Steele goal.   Cue Bobby McCulley with two late goals to put the then Bainsford based side through. Not the first time the team in black and white had upset a Cowden cup run or promotion aspirations.   Now Cowden 2012 look to lay the bogey and take the Central Park club beyond a Challenge Cup Quarter Finals for the first time. In fact, Cowden have only once before made the last eight of this competition for league teams outside the SPL.
