Westermann set for knee op
19 Jan 2010 - 16:48:25
Schalke defender Heiko Westermann is set to be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing surgery on an injury to his left knee.
The 26-year-old Germany international has been hampered by the problem for some time and has opted to go under the knife to fix damage to the the lateral meniscus in his left knee.
Westermann joined Schalke in the summer of 2007 from Arminia Bielefeld and has since made just over 100 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen club.
He was a member of the Germany squad at the European Championship finals in 2008 and is expected be part of coach Joachim Low's plans for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
The loss of Westermann comes shortly after midfielder Peer Kluge suffered a foot injury on his debut for the club following his arrival from Nurnberg.
The 29-year-old lasted 35 minutes of the 1-0 win over his former club at the weekend and medical checks have revealed ligament damage in his right ankle which could see Kluge ruled out for up to a month.
