Westermann pens new deal

Schalke have been boosted by the news that Heiko Westermann has pledged his long-term future to the club after signing a new contract.

The Germany international's form has been one of few positives for the Royal Blues during a disappointing season and the versatile Westermann has now put pen to paper on a deal that ties him to the club until summer 2014.

"It wasn't a difficult decision for me," said the 25-year-old defender.

"Schalke have become close to my heart and I am very proud to wear the shirt.

"At the moment we are not in the ideal situation but when you look at the stadium and the fans, it was easy to sign this contract."
