Schalke coach Felix Magath was a happy man after seeing his side win 2-0 at home to Koln to maintain their place among the Bundesliga title hopefuls.
Goals from Joel Matip and Jefferson Farfan secured a victory which keeps Schalke three points behind Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.
Magath told the club's official website. "The win over Koln was immensely important for the rest of the season.
"We've managed to build a points cushion ahead of some very difficult fixtures in the next few weeks. We could now lose a game without dropping a place in the table.
"It was hard for us to create chances, but in view of the second half we definitely deserved the three points.
"The fans didn't become impatient when things weren't going so well before the break. Instead they backed us and got right behind the team."
