Schalke's 5-1 defeat at Werder Bremen proved to be Mirko Slomka's last in charge of the club after the Gelsenkirchen side opted to sack him.
The news comes in the same week that the Bundesliga's third-placed side were beaten in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by Barcelona.
General manager Andreas Muller told the club's official website: "There was the option of terminating Mirko's deal at the end of the season but, following Saturday's game, we preferred to do it now.
"We didn't want a situation to develop which would endanger our chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League.
"Mirko did well for us, which is documented by the success we have had. But over the course of this season we got the impression that the squad has not developed."
