Schalke make Raul a new contract offer

Schalke 04 said Thursday they have emailed veteran Spanish striker Raul an offer to extend his contract with the ex-Real Madrid star's current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Schalke have met with Raul and his agent Gines Carvajal numerous times over the last few months, but the Royal Blues have tabled their latest bid via e-mail.

"We had planned to meet, but we both have an extremely busy schedule at the moment. We don't always have to meet in order to submit a proposal and we have modern means of communication," Schalke manager Horst Heldt said.

The 34-year-old Raul is reported to want a new two-year deal with the Royal Blues, while Schalke have offered only a one-year extension with the proceeds from a farewell game at their Veltins Arena.

Heldt has said he wants to meet Raul and his agent again this month, but says he is relaxed about keeping the striker in Gelsenkirchen.

"There's absolutely no hurry, because so far we are both on schedule," he said.

Raul is the all-time top-scorer in Champions League history with 71 goals and he scored the 400th competitive goal of his career when Schalke beat Wolfsburg 4-0 on February 19 in the German league.

He joined Schalke in July 2010 after 18 years at Real Madrid where he won the Champions League three times.
