Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl bemoans bad luck after defeat to Bayern Munich

Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl felt there was nothing but bad luck between his side and a draw against Bayern Munich on Friday night.

Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich in the final 10 minutes at the Veltins-Arena earned Bayern a second win out of two Bundesliga matches this season, and condemned Weinzierl to his second straight defeat as Schalke coach.

The former Augsburg coach nevertheless feels his side are heading in the right direction after getting almost everything right on the night.

"It's a pity because it was a very engaged performance from us," Weinzierl said at the post-match press conference after the 2-0 defeat.

"We were no worse than Bayern and we gave them a lot of challenges. At the end of the day, we looked good for 80 minutes and we've got to carry on like this in our coming games and we'll also pick up points.

"The only difference was the effectiveness. We were unlucky that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's shot only hit the crossbar, with Manuel Neuer getting his fingertips to it.

"Then Bayern did it right with Robert Lewandowski and in the end we conceded from another counter-attack, but that's football."

Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti also admitted that Schalke had given his team a good game - a contrast to the 6-0 win over Werder Bremen on the opening day of the season a fortnight ago.

"It was the tough game we expected it to be against tough opponents," said the Italian, whose side have yet to concede in three competitive games so far this season.

"Schalke caused us a great deal of problems and they were a bit better in the first half, while we were better in the second.

"In the end, we had patience and were able to raise our game a little towards the end.

" We're happy to return home with a second win in our second game of the season."

The win is likely to keep Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga this weekend with a goal difference of plus eight from their opening two games, while last season's top-scorer Lewandowski has already netted four.
