Schalke made a perfect start to life after the departure of coach Mirko Slomka as they thrashed Energie Cottbus 5-0, Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi scoring four times.
Slomka was shown the door following a 5-1 drubbing at Werder Bremen at the weekend, but Schalke recovered quickly to turn on the style on Tuesday evening.
An own goal and two strikes from Kuranyi made the half-time score 3-0, with the frontman going on to complete his treble just before the hour mark, before adding a fourth ten minutes from time.
Werder Bremen closed to within seven points of leaders Bayern Munich with a 2-1 victory at Hansa Rostock, Ivan Klasnic grabbing the winner eight minutes from time in the DKB-Arena.
Hamburg were held to a goalless draw at Hertha Berlin, while Bochum won 1-0 at Wolfsburg thanks to a Stanislav Sestak strike with just two minutes left to play.
