Schalke's German midfield star Lewis Holtby will leave at the end of the season, according to the club website Friday.

"Lewis Holtby has indicated to the club he will not take up an offer to extend his contract ... but on the contrary will leave at the end of the season when his current deal expires," the Bundesliga side announced.

Schalke, currently seventh in the table, said Holtby's decision was "regrettable" but to be respected.

The son of a British father, Holtby, 22, has scored three goals this season and weighed in with three assists.

Schalke, meanwhile, said they were delighted that Dutch goalscorer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had agreed to extend his contract at the Ruhr-based club.
