Schalke moved up to second place in the Bundesliga with a narrow 1-0 victory at home to lowly Hansa Rostock.
Turkey striker Halil Altintop scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second half.
Hamburg slipped to third place as they were beaten 1-0 at reigning champions Stuttgart, with Roberto Hilbert's 20th minute strike proving decisive.
Werder Bremen moved level on points with Hamburg thanks to a 2-1 win at Hertha Berlin, Tim Borowski grabbing the winner 17 minutes from time after Markus Rosenberg's first-minute opener had been cancelled out.
Two goals from Ashkan Dejagah helped Wolfsburg see off Hannover 3-2 in the Volkswagen Arena, with the result boosting Felix Magath's side's hopes of qualifying for Europe.
At the bottom, both Arm Bielefeld and Nurnberg picked up much-needed victories.
Bielefeld won 1-0 at home to Karlsruhe, with Leonidas Kampadais snatching a dramatic last-minute winner.
Meanwhile Nurnberg ran out 3-1 winners at Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to goals from Angelos Charisteas, Robert Vittek and Zvjezdan Misimovic.
