Sampdoria president Giuseppe Marotta has played down Antonio Cassano's threat to quit the club following weekend abuse.

The Italy striker suggested he could walk away from the Luigi Ferraris outfit after being jeered during Sunday's goalless draw with the Serie A strugglers.

Cassano has a history of fall-outs with former clubs and coaches but Marotta has moved to calm the situation.

"The words of Cassano are those of a person who is sincere," he said. "He just said what was inside of him.

"They are the typical declarations made post-match.

"Cassano is always respected because he is a direct person and boldly told people what he really felt inside of him at the time.

"He was unhappy that he could not help his team close the gap to Inter and, on a personal level, score a goal.

"But he did not deserve the whistles from a certain section of the crowd. They are in a minority and Cassano was talking directly to them."
