Sporting director Giuseppe Marotta claimed the Sampdoria players could leave with their heads held high despite losing the Coppa Italia Final on Wednesday.

Sam lost 6-5 to Lazio on penalties after the two sides could not be separated at 1-1 after 120 minutes of play.

"When you lose in this manner, you cannot help but be extremely bitter," admitted Marotta.

"The lottery of penalties can produce many emotions and unfortunately in our case, we are left with a very bitter taste in our mouths.

"I must say though that I would like to honour our players anyway as they gave their all and were very impressive tonight."
