Sampdoria have moved quickly to dismiss a report in an Italian newspaper claiming that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was keen to buy the Serie A club.

Italian newspaper Il Giornale ran a story saying the Russian billionaire had held talks with the Genoa-based team.

However, a statement from Sampdoria read: "With regards to the report that appeared in the newspaper 'Il Giornale', Sampdoria states that the story is without foundation.

"The club reiterates that the hypothetical sale of share packages is absolutely not the intention of the club, or of its president Riccardo Garrone and the shareholders."
