Veteran Scottish football coach Alex Miller has been appointed to take over at Russian second division outfit Sibir Novosibirsk, the club's press service announced Tuesday.

The 62-year-old, who played with Glasgow Rangers from 1967-82, will take over from Dmitry Radyukin, who resigned after the end of the last season.

No other details of the deal were disclosed.

"The proposal of Sibir was a serious challenge for me," said Miller, who was previously working for nine years in English Premiership side Liverpool as a scouting director and an assistant coach to Rafael Benitez.

"I believe my skills and knowledge will help the club return to the Russian Premier League."

In 2008 Miller was appointed manager of Japanese side United Chiba at a time when they had just two points from 11 matches. He managed to save them from relegation.

In 2010 Miller took over at Swedish league side AIK Solna but he left after just five months at the helm.

"I was really excited with what I've seen here in Novosibirsk," the press service quoted Miller as saying. "The club has an excellent infrastructure, a splendid arena and the full backing of Novosibirsk City Hall."

"My main goal now is to prepare the players for the start of new season in Russia the best possible way."

Last season Sibir collected 61 points from 38 matches to finish fifth in the Russian second division, 12 points behind table-toppers Alania Vladikavkaz.
