Rotherham United caretaker manager Mark Robins accepted that the spirit in the Millers camp was at rock-bottom after a 5-1 home thrashing by Port Vale.
The mauling by Vale leaves the Millers facing almost certain relegation to League Two, with Robins facing a tough task in the coming weeks.
He commented: "The game was over at half-time.
"We started reasonably well, but the first goal killed it and you saw the body language of the players.
"From there it was a real struggle and we were punished at every opportunity.
"If you don't defend and you don't attack the ball in both boxes you end up on the end of a losing scoreline like this."
