Rotherham have been docked ten points after being placed in administration for the second time in three years.
The South Yorkshire club announced last month that they had filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator after talks with several potential investors stalled.
The Millers were given until mid-March to try to find new investment, but will now fall from seventh to 11th place in the table.
The promotion-chasers will now be six points adrift of the final play-off place.
"It is with regret that Rotherham United have entered into administration," read the briefest of club statements.
The Millmoor club were previously placed in administration in summer 2006 and were relegated to the bottom tier of the Football League at the end of last season.
