Consistency the key - Raynor
With Steve Evans serving the third of his six game stadium ban tomorrow, assistant Paul Raynor again takes the hotseat as the Millers prepare to face lowly Barnet.
With three defeats from seven so far and still without an away victory, Raynor will be looking to bounce back from Tuesdays loss to Rochdale by defeating the leagues bottom club.
And the acting gaffer has called for the team to be much more consistent.
He told the Advertiser: “You talk about us being favourites for promotion. That means absolutely nothing. You earn the right to be top of the table and at the moment we're too up and down. A win on Tuesday would have taken us into the top three. Now we're tenth and playing catch-up again. Good teams put runs of six, seven, eight and nine unbeaten together and when they lose one they go on another run.
“We need to string three or four together, that would be nice. You can't win a game, lose a game, win a game, lose a game. You end up mid-table and maybe even below so that needs to change very quickly.
“Three points are just as important now as at the end of the season because if you're not up there at that stage then you're not going to be in contention. We need to end this stop-start scenario, put some runs together and be a lot more solid defensively that's for sure.”
Raynor adds: “We have no divine right to turn up and because we've got a fantastic stadium and a beautiful pitch and fantastic supporters who get right behind us, think it is going to be easy.
“Visiting teams are going to raise their game. I would love to play out there and everyone who turns up here is going to think the same. We need to respond to that. It just doesn't become a fortress because we're Rotherham United. You have to earn that tag.
“Maybe they think they had only to turn up to beat Rochdale. It doesn't happen like that. You should be able to play at a high tempo for 90 minutes and until we do that then we're going to have the inconsistency.”
