We need to defend from the front - Moore

02 December 2010 11:39
With Saturdays game at Gillingham looking in real doubt due to the weather, Ronnie Moore has his team working hard indoors in the gym and also speaks about the need to defend as a unit. The Millers have seen little grass action due to widespread snow which has also kept many of us off work, college and university. While the players continue to do what they can regards training, Moore spoke to the Star about getting back on track ahead of the Christmas period and tightening the defence."Defending starts from the front," said Moore. "The two lads who play up front have to work their socks off, the midfield four have to close people down and we have to hold a high lane. "That comes from training and we will be doing a lot of eleven-aside this week where we can. We have to get it right over the Christmas period to get back into that top three."He told The Star he has brought in Paul Downing as cover only. "He is not here to be playing," added the manager. "We are grateful to WBA and we explained our situation to them and we are glad to get the lad in around the first-team environment."We couldn't leave ourselves wide open if Nick (Fenton) or Ryan (Cresswell) ended up being injured and we had gone past the loan window. We would have been in deep trouble then because we only have Luke and John Mullins and that would have left us very short."He continued: "We are not looking for excuses. We have conceded a lot of goals."It was the home form that cost us last season and we have got to make sure we turn it around. We have lost one game at home but drawn five and that is too many. "We haven't had a settled back four all season and that hasn't helped. I'm sure once we get a settled team that we will be alright."We also have to be brighter by taking quick throw ins, corners and free-kicks. We have to move the ball quicker and put the opposition on the back foot."The Millers are due to set off to Kent tomorrow lunchtime, but many will be hoping for an early call off to avoid having to travel in the wintery conditions.
