For Rotherham's referee Howard Webb the World Cup final is that dream. In an interview with the Advertiser Webb spoke of how success in the World Cup can give everyone a lift, Howard said:"The World Cup final is the ultimate dream and it is not totally unrealistic for any of the 24 referees here. Anyone could do the final. "A lot of it is out of your control. For instance, how the national team does can affect my progress and the type of games I do. "You need a bit of luck in the refereeing game, as well as working hard.""I would be delighted if we won it. Can you imagine the buzz that would give English football? It would have a knock-on effect at Rotherham United and everywhere, so my fingers are crossed for the national team as well. "Hopefully I will do well and hopefully the national team will also and if they do stop my progress then I will not be bitter or sad about that. I'll be quite happy about it."Webb has the European Cup final already under his belt this season, and the experience of that will stand him in good stead for the World Cup, Webb said:"Myself and the assistant referees knew the game could be career- defining and that one poor decision could change careers. It can stay with you forever. "Thankfully, it went well. In fact, it was the best day of my life." "Top games get easier because you're more comfortable in your ability but I do still get nervous," he said. "I get butterflies but it helps me perform better if I feel that way and the adrenaline starts to flow. It sharpens your senses and you can see things more clearly. I'm glad that's the way it is. "It's a cliche, but I'll take one game at a time at the World Cup."Webb's first game in charge will be on Wednesday, Spain v Switzerland. "My aim is to nail the Spain game and get through it in an efficient way and then hopefully get a second one and then see where I go."
