Paolo Di Canio linked with vacant manager's job at Rotherham

Former Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio's representatives have contacted Sky Bet Championship club Rotherham about their vacant managerial position, Press Association Sport understands.

The colourful Italian has been out of work since leaving the Black Cats in September 2013, but is keen to return to game and his representatives sounded out the potential for him to become Steve Evans' successor at the South Yorkshire club.

However, the Millers have indicated they have no interest in the 47-year-old, who has a promotion on his CV during his time at Swindon, becoming their new boss.

Di Canio left Sunderland after a whirlwind 13 games at the Stadium of Light where, after initially keeping them in the Barclays Premier League and famously masterminding a 3-0 Tyne-Wear derby success over Newcastle in the 2012-13 campaign, things turned sour the following season, with reports of a player revolt.

He left after taking just one point from the opening five games of the season.

The Millers are on the look-out for a new manager after Evans surprisingly left his post on Monday after a success-laden three and a half years at the club.

The Scot, also a colourful character, led the club from League Two to Championship safety and left after just overseeing back-to-back wins over Cardiff and Birmingham.

His exit was put down to the two parties wanting to go in "different directions", though there are reports of a fall-out with the board.

Former Leeds boss Neil Redfearn has expressed his interest in the role to Press Association Sport while ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray is also believed to be a frontrunner for the role.

First-team coach Eric Black has been placed in caretaker charge of the side and is preparing for Friday's televised visit of Burnley.
