But the much-fancied Millers were given a stern test by the team without a point so far this campaign.

It took a controversial penalty awarded by referee Graham Salisbury to hand the South Yorkshire side the breakthrough after a scrappy first half.

Grimsby right-back Robbie Stockdale was adjudged to have handled Paul Warne's cross eight minutes after half-time and Adam Le Fondre stepped up to stroke home his first goal for Rotherham from the spot.

A spirited Grimsby hit back and got on level terms with 64 minutes gone when Peter Sweeney's left-foot shot from 20 yards squirmed past veteran keeper Andy Warrington.

However, they were only level for three minutes when Rotherham made the most of another soft decision and substitute Micky Cummins scored with a downward header from Nicky Law's free-kick to clinch all three points.
