With cash still available to the Scot, and the loan deal for Celtic's Tony Watt falling flat last weekend, Steve Evans is still on the lookout for a forward. However, speaking to the 'Tiser he had a little dig at former boss Andy Scott and said he won't be wasting money on pointless signings.
“I’m going to have to say this, I don’t want to do what Andy Scott did and sign players for the sake of signing them. I want players who can make us better."
"I think we can all identify, without naming names, one or two in the squad that are here this season because their contracts overlap from last season. They’re having to work extremely hard just to get a place on our bench. I’m never going to fault those lads because they’re giving it everything they’re got, but I’m not going to add to the squad with someone who might only make a difference, who may be a good player in a couple of years’ time."
“One thing I firmly I firmly believe in, is that while the chairman invests in the youth policy and its infrastructure, that’s a bit different to investing money and signing senior players who might make a difference in a year or two. Forget about football, none of us know whether we’ll be breathing in a year or two, so we need players who can make a difference now. That’s the type of player we’re still in the market for; one who will add to what we’ve got."
“If there’s a player that can add to what we’ve got then we’ve got funds in the budget to make these signings. We haven’t spent all the money yet that the chairman has allocated.” he added.
