31 year-old Shearer, who turned down a new contract offer at Steve Evans old club Crawley last week, has been targeted by the Millers boss for the number one slot next season.
However Evans faces stiff competition for his signature. Having shown the player round the club he now expects an answer shortly.
Meanwhile the gaffer refused to comment on the speculation linking the Millers with Port Vale forward Richards, but we understand a decision from the player about joining the club will be made in the next 48 hours.
Rivals Chesterfield are the other club leading the race for his signature.
